Helpful Hints: When A Storm Is Approaching
When you learn about an approaching storm, it is always wise to take some necessary precautions, whether you are staying at home or leaving for the day.
1. Make sure all your major appliances, computers, TV's etc are on a surge protector.
2. Prior to leaving the house and to guard against closeby lightning strikes, unplug various equipment connections: phone wire from modem, wireless radio receiver cable from the POE, Television/VCR/Stereo from wall socket, as well as computers!
3. Unplug your major appliances from their receptacles.
4. If you are at home, shut down the computer, stay off the phone and follow the above steps.
The time you take now, will most certainly save you time and money later!
Helpful Hints: Power Cycling Equipment
In the event you are unable to connect to the internet there are a few steps you can take before calling in to Axiom
Power Cycling Your Router and/or POE:
1. Power Cycling the Router
The Router, (whether wireless or wired, connects your computers to the Internet through the POE, mentioned below). In some instances, your router may need to be power cycled to reset it. In order to do this, take your power supply cord and unplug it from your wall receptacle, wait two minutes before plugging it back in, then reboot your computer and check to see if you can connect to the Internet.
Always make sure your router lights are lit up.
2. Power Cycling the POE
The POE's (small box connected to outside wire that comes into your home, powers the radio receiver), power supply cord should be unplugged from your wall receptacle, wait two minutes before plugging it back in, reboot your computer and then check to see if you can connect to the Internet.
If your POE has lights on them, make sure they are lit up.
This is helpful after storms, routing changes, equipment movement etc. Power cycling recaptures any protocols needed to bring you to the Internet.
If you have followed both these steps and still are not able to connect to the Internet, then please give our Technical staff a phone call for help, making sure you are at your computer so we can do technical support with you and check other aspects.
Guided Walkthroughs
Why do I get so much spam? Spam is cheap marketing, sending messages to millions of people for costs of less than a dollar. This is only possible because spammers shift the burden of cost from the sender to the receiver. Sadly some people also actually buy some of the goods offered. All of this means that spammers are not likely to stop spamming in the near future. So PLEASE DON'T BUY ANYTHING ADVERTISED BY SPAM! This will only make them spam more. If there is something advertised by spam that actually interests you, find it somewhere else on-line. Avoid buying products promoted by spam and find out more about spam here.
What is Spyware? Spyware is a general term used to describe software that performs certain behaviors such as advertising, collecting personal information, or changing the configuration of your computer, generally without appropriately obtaining your consent first.
How do I protect my computer from Spyware? Axiom recommends installing the following 4 Anti-Spyware programs on your computer. These programs are free, and the companies that offer these products are committed to helping you protect your computer. Once the programs are installed, be sure that you update the Anti-Spyware definitions every week, and scan your computer at least once a week.
Recommended Anti-Spyware (free):
Spybot
Adware
Spysweeper
